Since its launch on 6th June the SportRenfrewshire Junior Bowls
Initiative, has already demonstrated the quality of the project
and our your sports persons at the SALSC National Junior Bowls
Championships.
In the recent
Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils (SALSC) National
Junior Bowls Championships held at Blackland
Bowling Club Kilwinning and hosted by North
Ayrshire Sports Council, the two SportRenfrewshire
teams competed with teams from all over Scotland.
The
SportRenfrewshire Teams where selected from Bowling Clubs throughout
the Renfrewshire Region by Jim McIntosh
(Scottish
Bowling Association Regional Supervisor), Eddie
Hughes ( Scottish Bowling Association
Area Coach) and Jimmy
Redmond (Scottish Bowling Association Club Coach)
.
The Teams
and coaches did an excellent job being sporting, courteous and
indeed competitive throughout the day bringing great credit to
Renfrewshire. The bonus and indeed proof of the success of the
SportRenfrewshire Junior Bowling Initiative was that one of our
teams, consisting of Juniors from Johnstone,
Kilbarchan and Hawkhead Bowling Clubs, went all
the way to the final being narrowly pipped for first place by
Dunfermline and West Lothian. An older more experienced team.

SportRenfrewshire are delighted with the squad performance as
is Regional Supervisor of SBA Jim McIntosh who said
"The initiative of SportRenfrewshire
in developing the Junior Bowls/Curling programme must be congratulated.
Their networking, vision, organisation and patronage has been
second to none. We are already making plans to further develop
the Sport Renfrewshire Junior Bowls initiative that will benefit
all the young people who take part.
We hope to go from strength to strength and try to involve more
young people, male and female in partnership with SportRenfrewshire
and their network of clubs".
The teams
were supported by a contingent of supporters from Renfrewshire,
including some from Johnstone Bowling Club, who hired a mini bus
to take them to Kilwinning.
SportRenfrewshire
wish to thank JW Goudie of Paisley
who sponsored the initiative including the entry fees of the two
teams who took part in the SALSC National Championships. Thanks
also to SportRenfrewshire member bowling clubs, parents of our
young sports persons and our friends from North Ayrshire Sports
Council who organised such a well run event as well as a first
class purvey and also providing excellent trophies.
Several other
Local Sports Councils have expressed an interest in being involved
in this initiative.
SportRenfrewshire Secretary Billy Hassan Jnr. Said
"SportRenfrewshire
are delighted at how well our initiative has progressed. To
finish runner up in a National competition so soon after beginning
the Junior Bowls programme is a bonus and a credit to the players
and coaches who participated. We look forward to what should
be a bright future. We
are fortunate to have first class partnerships and will continue
to work with our partners to encourage more youth to take up
Bowls and other sports or physical activities".
