The awards evening,
held for the first time at Hawkhead, demonstrated that SportRenfrewshire
is alive and kicking and following its’ policy to host events
at member clubs. This in itself supports our local sport by raising
the profile and contributing financial support to SportRenfrewshire
member clubs. Nominees from a diverse variety of sport in Senior,
Junior and Coach of the Year sections attended on the night and
were interviewed before a sell out audience.
Special
Guest on the night was Steve Frew. Steve, “Lord of the Rings”,
holds the record of winning eight consecutive Scottish Championship
men’s senior titles and at the 2002 Commonwealth Games held
in Manchester, without any funding, picked up Scotland’s
first ever Commonwealth gymnastics gold medal. Steve praised SportRenfrewshire
for putting together such an incredible evening showcasing the
host of Talent in Renfrewshire.
“I am looking
forward to working with your chairman Ian Lynchahon and his executive
committee to further develop Gymnastics in Renfrewshire and give
the opportunity for youngsters to take up the sport”.
Steve also gave an
insight into competing and winning at World Level but said from
what he had witnessed tonight that “You have the talent
and determination to achieve great success. You deserve financial
support to make your dreams a reality”. Steve later presented
the Senior Sports Person of the Year Award.
Another
Guest was Mr. George Morton, Vice Chairman of the SALSC (Scottish
Association of Local Sports Councils) International Committee.
George, who arrived from France to Present the SALSC Service to
Sports Award, Congratulated SportRenfrewshire on the work it does
and for “involving member clubs in hosting this wonderful
awards ceremony”.
He went on to illustrate the high esteem SportRenfrewshire is
held and praised the “Excellent work it undertakes locally
and internationally on behalf of members as well as the partnership
working with other local sports councils. This is even more remarkable
in that SportRenfrewshire has to raise its own funds. SportRenfrewshire
continues to demonstrate the perfect example of supporting local
sport that should be adopted throughout Scotland”.
Agnes Alexander, Vice
Chairperson of Hawkhead Bowling Club Executive Committee, was
another special guest who presented the Coach of The Year Award.
Agnes said “Hawkhead is delighted to have been given the
opportunity to host the SportRenfrewshire Sports Person of the
Year Awards. We bowlers often get so rapped up in our sport we
sometimes do not realise the success of other sports. I have had
my eyes opened tonight. Not only does Renfrewshire have many talented
bowlers but indeed many, many gifted individuals from other sports.
May the great work of SportRenfrewshire continue. We at Hawkhead
certainly support them".
